Body-safe materials
The list is three items long. Everything else is a compromise you should make knowingly, not by accident.
The list. Platinum-cure silicone, borosilicate glass, and 316L stainless steel. All three are non-porous, all three survive full sterilization, and none require a plasticizer to stay flexible. Nothing else clears all three tests.
What "body safe" has to mean
The phrase has no legal definition in this category, so it needs a working one. Three properties do the job.
Non-porous. A sealed surface that fluid sits on rather than travels into. This is the one that matters most, because it determines whether the item can ever be genuinely clean.
Sterilizable. Survives a method that reaches below the surface, which in practice means heat. A material that deforms at boiling temperature cannot be sterilized regardless of what you do to it.
No plasticizer dependence. Flexibility comes from the polymer itself rather than from something added that will eventually migrate out.
Platinum-cure silicone
Non-porous, boilable, dishwasher tolerant, and soft because of its own chemistry rather than an additive. The addition-cure process produces no by-product, so the material is dimensionally stable and does not change after it leaves the mould. The cure system distinction is explained in full here.
One incompatibility worth knowing: silicone lubricant chemically bonds to silicone surfaces and degrades them permanently, leaving a tacky finish that cannot be reversed. Water-based lubricant with anything silicone.
Borosilicate glass
The formulation used in laboratory glassware and cookware. Non-porous, chemically non-reactive, tolerant of thermal shock in a way ordinary soda-lime glass is not, and compatible with every lubricant including silicone.
Buy borosilicate specifically. Soda-lime is the cheap window-glass formulation and it fractures under thermal stress. A reputable seller states borosilicate; a vague one says only glass. Retire any glass item immediately on a chip or crack, because a chip creates an edge and a crack creates a fracture plane, and there is no safe repair.
316L stainless steel
The surgical and marine grade. Added molybdenum makes it substantially more corrosion resistant than 304, which matters for something repeatedly exposed to moisture and salt. Non-porous, fully sterilizable, effectively indestructible.
The trade-off is weight. Steel is heavier than people expect, often by a lot, and that is the main reason it gets returned. It is also completely rigid.
What does not qualify, and why
| Material | Fails on |
|---|---|
| ABS plastic | Non-porous but deforms with heat, so it cannot be sterilized. Rigid components only. |
| Tin-cure silicone | Non-porous and safe, but off-gasses and degrades over its life. |
| TPE / TPR | Porous. Cannot be sterilized. Finite safe life. Detail here. |
| PVC jelly | Porous and plasticizer dependent. Detail here. |
| Proprietary trade names | Cyberskin, UR3 and similar are elastomer blends. Treat as TPE. |
The rule that covers everything
Named polymer, named cure system or grade, named manufacturing location. A seller who publishes all three is accepting accountability the law does not require of them, and in a market with no material disclosure requirement at all, that voluntary transparency is the strongest signal available.
Every product on our ranked list comes from a manufacturer that meets that bar.

Questions
Is ABS plastic body safe?
It is non-porous and inert, which makes it fine for rigid parts like handles and caps. It cannot be sterilized with heat because it deforms, so it does not clear the full bar on its own.
What about wood or ceramic?
Both exist in small-batch form. Sealed hardwood and glazed ceramic can be non-porous if the seal or glaze is intact and complete, but the safety depends entirely on that coating remaining undamaged, which makes them harder to verify than the core three.
Is silicone always safe?
Silicone is always non-porous, but cure system and blend purity vary. Silicone-blend products marketed as silicone are common at low price points, which is why price and disclosure both matter.
Does body safe mean hypoallergenic?
No, and hypoallergenic has no enforced definition either. Silicone, glass and steel are all very low allergenicity, but a genuine nickel sensitivity is worth raising with a doctor before buying steel.
