What non-porous actually means

Washing cleans what you can see. Only a non-porous surface lets you clean what you cannot.

Short answer. A non-porous material has a sealed surface, so fluid stays on top of it and can be fully removed. A porous material has microscopic channels that hold fluid and bacteria below the surface, where no household cleaning method reaches. That single property decides whether an item is permanent or disposable.

The physical difference

Porosity is about surface structure at a scale you cannot see. A non-porous surface is continuous and closed. Nothing penetrates it, so anything deposited on it can be lifted off with soap and water and finished with heat.

A porous surface has openings. Liquid enters them by capillary action and stays. The opening may be far too small to see, but it is enormous relative to a bacterium.

Why washing is not enough

Soap and water are surface actions. They lift material off a surface and carry it away. They do not penetrate into a pore network, and scrubbing does not help because the bristles are orders of magnitude larger than the openings.

Sterilization is different. Heat does not need to physically reach into a pore, it needs to raise the temperature of the whole material past the point where organisms cannot survive. This works beautifully on silicone, glass, and steel, which all tolerate boiling.

It does not work on TPE, PVC, or ABS, because the temperature required to sterilize them is above the temperature at which they deform. The material fails before the organisms do. That is the trap: the only method that would clean a porous item is the method that destroys it.

What this changes

Whether you can share it. A non-porous item can be sterilized between users. A porous one cannot, which makes barrier use the minimum and replacement the actual answer.

Whether it has a lifespan. Non-porous items in good condition do not expire. Porous items accumulate what they absorb and degrade structurally, giving them a safe life measured in months.

What it costs over time. A $120 steel item you keep for fifteen years is cheaper than a $30 porous item replaced annually, and considerably cheaper than one you keep past the point where you should have replaced it.

How to tell without lab equipment

You do not test for porosity directly. You identify the material and read the property off it, because porosity is a characteristic of the material class rather than of the individual product.

MaterialPorous
Platinum-cure siliconeNo
Borosilicate glassNo
316L stainless steelNo
ABS plasticNo, but not heat tolerant
TPE / TPRYes
PVC jellyYes

So the practical question is never “is this porous.” It is “is the listed material accurate,” which is a question you can answer with price, weight, smell, and a burn test.

The signs a porous item is finished

  • Surface tack that returns after washing
  • Colour change, particularly yellowing or darkening
  • A smell that survives cleaning
  • Visible cracking, splitting, or pitting
  • An oily film, which indicates plasticizer migration

Any of these means the item has reached the end of its safe life. The full cleaning and replacement guide is here.

Questions

Can I sterilize a porous toy in the dishwasher?

No. Dishwasher temperatures will deform TPE and PVC, and even if the item survived, the cycle is a surface action that does not reach the pore network.

Are pores visible?

No. They are microscopic. A porous surface can look and feel completely smooth while holding a substantial amount of absorbed material.

How long does a porous toy stay safe?

Roughly six to eighteen months depending on frequency of use and storage, but the honest answer is that there is no way to verify it on any given day, which is the core problem.

Is silicone ever porous?

Genuine silicone is not. Silicone-blend products sold as silicone can be, which is why identifying the real material matters more than reading the label.
