Tin cure is cheaper, releases a by-product as it cures, and continues to degrade over its life. Manufacturers who use platinum say so, because it costs them more.
Two ways to turn liquid silicone into a solid
Silicone arrives at a factory as a liquid. Getting it to a finished solid requires a curing reaction, and there are two industrial routes.
Tin cure, properly called condensation cure, uses a tin catalyst. The reaction produces a small-molecule by-product, typically an alcohol, which has to leave the material. That off-gassing continues after the product ships, and the polymer network keeps changing as it happens. Tin-cure silicone shrinks slightly over time, loses elasticity, and can eventually go brittle or tacky at the surface.
Platinum cure, properly called addition cure, uses a platinum catalyst. The reaction produces no by-product at all. Every atom that goes in stays in the finished part. The result is dimensionally stable, chemically inert, and does not change after it leaves the mould.
Why platinum costs more
Platinum catalyst is expensive, the process is less forgiving, and contamination will inhibit the cure entirely, which means tighter process control and more scrap. A manufacturer running platinum cure is spending meaningfully more per unit than one running tin.
That cost difference is why the disclosure is useful. A brand paying for platinum cure wants credit for it and states it plainly on the product page. Silence about the cure system is not proof of tin cure, but it is a reasonable working assumption.

Both are non-porous, which means both are far safer than any elastomer. This is a durability and stability question rather than a hygiene one. Tin-cure silicone is a legitimate material that will still be non-porous in year three. It just will not be quite the same object it was in year one.
What about "medical grade silicone"?
The phrase usually gestures at silicone that meets USP Class VI biocompatibility testing, which is a real standard involving real laboratory work. Nothing stops a seller in this category from using the phrase without having commissioned any of it, because these products are not regulated as medical devices and no agency audits the claim.
Platinum cure is the more useful thing to look for, because it describes the actual chemistry rather than gesturing at a certification. A seller who names the cure system is telling you something checkable.
How to identify it
You cannot distinguish platinum from tin cure at home. There is no burn test, smell test, or stretch test that separates them, because both are genuine silicone and both behave like silicone. This one comes down entirely to disclosure.
