Temperature
Steel holds heat and cold far longer than silicone, which is a feature people specifically seek out. Warm or cool it in a bowl of water rather than a microwave, freezer, or under running water that changes temperature. Test against the inside of your wrist before use. Is 304 stainless steel safe?

Does steel rust?
316L is highly corrosion resistant and will not rust in normal use. Lower grades can develop surface pitting over time with repeated moisture exposure.
Is steel safe for someone with a nickel allergy?
Stainless steel contains nickel, and a genuine nickel sensitivity is worth raising with a doctor before buying. Borosilicate glass is the alternative with the same rigidity and no nickel.
