Realism used to require a porous material. Dual-density silicone is the construction that changed that, and it is the only honest way to get both.
For years there was a genuine trade-off in this category. If you wanted a realistic soft feel you bought TPE, PVC jelly, or something with a trade name like UR3 or Cyberskin, and you accepted a porous material you could never actually clean. If you wanted safety you bought single-density silicone and accepted that it felt like silicone.
Dual-density construction ended that trade-off. A firm inner core is moulded first, then a much softer outer layer is poured around it. The result compresses and moves under pressure the way soft tissue does, while the core provides structure. Both layers are platinum-cure silicone, so the whole thing is non-porous and boils.
The practical upshot. Anyone still selling porous elastomer on the grounds that it feels more realistic is selling you a solved problem. Dual-density silicone gets you the feel and keeps sterilization on the table. It costs more, and that is the only real trade-off left.

UR3, Cyberskin, Fanta Flesh, Futurotic and the rest are elastomer blends marketed on feel. They do feel impressive out of the box. They are also porous, unsterilizable, require renewal powder to stop them going sticky, and have a safe life measured in months rather than years.

How dual density is made
Two pours. The firm core is moulded first and cured, then placed into a larger mould and the soft outer layer is poured around it. Both are platinum-cure silicone, which matters because the two layers have to bond chemically rather than mechanically. That second pour is why these cost what they do: two moulds, two cure cycles, more scrap, more handling.
It is also why a $30 product cannot be dual-density platinum silicone regardless of what the listing claims. The price is the check that never lies.
Firmness and effective size
Dual density compresses under pressure, which means it behaves smaller than its measurements suggest. A rigid glass or steel product at the same circumference behaves larger. That makes dual-density more forgiving of a size misjudgement and a safer choice if you are unsure of your fit. Circumference is the dimension that matters.
Caring for soft silicone
Soft outer layers pick up lint, hair, and dust more than firm ones. Store each item separately in a cotton bag rather than loose in a drawer, and never sealed in plastic while damp.

Why we do not recommend the elastomer options
The argument for TPE and UR3 used to be that nothing else felt right. That is no longer true. What remains is a porous material with a finite safe life competing against a non-porous one that lasts indefinitely, at a price difference of roughly $60.
